How Long Does Spray Tan Last?
While spray tans are usually meant to last for about a week, they will gradually fade over time. That’s because our skin naturally regenerates itself and those old cells will eventually be sloughed away, taking the colour with them.
There are a few things you can do to help your tan last longer. This includes exfoliating, wearing loose clothing, and moisturizing.
Preparation
Depending on the colour you choose, spray tan lasts anywhere from hours to days but it is important to guard it by keeping the skin moisturised. This will prevent dry, flaky skin cells from rubbing off and causing the tan to fade or patchy.
Moisturising is important for your entire body, especially problem areas such as elbows, feet and cuticles. It is also recommended to avoid bathing or swimming for a few hours after the spray tan, as chlorine in pools can break down the tan.
Avoid waxing your limbs before getting sprayed, as this can cause the bronzer to seep into your pores and leave dark spots. It is recommended to shave. Also, it is recommended to wear loose clothing or flip flops after getting sprayed so the tan doesn’t rub off onto your clothes or stain them. You should also wait at least 6-8 hours before showering so that the tan has time to fully develop.
Exfoliation
The most important step in maintaining a spray tan is exfoliation. This helps the tanning solution penetrate your skin evenly and last longer. It also prevents the build-up of dead skin cells that can make your tan fade prematurely.
A good quality body exfoliating mitt, is essential for scrubbing away dead skin without disturbing your freshly applied spray tan. We recommend using it at least two days before your spray tan appointment to ensure the results are optimal.
You should avoid showering for 6 to 8 hours post-spray tan. If you do shower, use lukewarm water and gentle, moisturizing body wash. When drying off, pat your body rather than rubbing, as this can rub away some of the color. Additionally, you should limit your time in chlorinated pools as chlorine can strip the color from your skin. Finally, you should avoid shaving or waxing until after your tan has fully developed.
Moisturizing
We recommend to our clients not to use any body products until their spray tan is fully developed, especially oily or creamy ones as they can interfere with the pH levels of your skin and therefore change the colour. Instead have a shower with water and use a light exfoliation to prepare your skin before your appointment.
Don’t wear tight clothes to your spray tan appointment; if the fabric catches the tan, it will fade faster. We also advise that you wait eight hours before showering and that you do so with lukewarm water; hot water can strip the spray tan.
Don’t rub your skin when towel drying; this can cause blemishes or even streaking. Also, don’t swim before your tan has fully developed as chlorine or salt in the ocean will eat away at it. The spray tan will last longer if you avoid these things.
Sun exposure
When summer rolls around, many people look to add some colour to their skin. Instead of using indoor tanning, which can cause a range of health conditions, spray tans are an easy and safe option.
However, there are some things you should avoid doing to help your spray tan last longer. Firstly, it’s best not to shower or bathe for about 6-8 hours after your spray tan is applied. This will prevent your body’s pores from closing and causing the tan to fade unevenly.
It’s also ill-advised to wax before a spray tan appointment as this can leave a residue behind, which can affect the way your tan holds up. You should also avoid swimming for a few days after your spray tan, as the chlorine in the pool can increase the rate at which it fades.
In addition to these tips, keeping hydrated and moisturised will also help your tan last longer. To ensure your skin is hydrated after each shower, try applying a lotion pampering body cream to keep your skin feeling soft and supple.
